Starting us off is the sequel to one of the most hyped films of the noughties, Slumdog Millionnaire.

10. SLUMDOG BILLIONAIRE

Follow the increasingly unlikely adventures as he gambles with his rupees and watch his wealth soar beyond the dreams of avarice. Bask in the year’s most uplifting film with even more scenes of depravation, child torture, violence and mutilation. Nice.

9. 28 MONTHS LATER

Danny Boyle returns to his zombie franchise which sees the US being infected after the improbable transatlantic helicopter flight.  Shudder as a bunch of unengaging characters do stupid things to further the plot and meet their fates in more and more elaborate CGI deaths.

8. THE CORE 2

Earth’s molten core has gone and done it again!  Once more on a slowdown, in New Movies our intrepid heroes board and unfeasibly heat and pressure resistant vessel to save the day.  In this follow-up to the worst-science-seen-in-a-movie-ever award winner can the director make it two in a row?

7. STAR WARS IV – A NEW HOPE 3D

A million voices cried out, ‘Leave it alone, Lucas!’, and fell silent.  The latest definitive edition combines over-the-top sensory overload with even more added embarrassing aliens gurning and belching.  This is the film that makes Avatar look distinctly 2D.

6. NIGHT AT THE TATE

Ben Stiller brings the magic to the UK but this time he’s guarding art gallery exhibits.  Surprising the fans by making it an 18 certificate this series loses its shackles and goes all out in horror as Stiller regrets sneering at an unmade bed when the gallery comes to life and he is pursued by a marinated sheep and half a shark.

5. THE QUEEN’S SPEECH

Following a terrible change in fortune for Colin Firth, he reprises his multi award winning role with a twist to reclaim his reputation as a versatile artist.  No longer playing George VI, Firth returns in this extravagant, sumptuous, colourful,  gay musical as Queen Georgina VI.  Tastefully done of course.

4. SAW VIII

‘Nuff said.

3. AIRPLANE 3

Bad taste returns big time to our cinema screens as a CGI Leslie Nielsen reprises his role.  Hollywood wouldn’t stoop so low, surely?  With a rich vein of new material prepare for laughs poking fun at snowbound airports, volcanic eruptions and terrorist attacks.

2. M NIGHT SHYALAMAN’S – I DO IT AGAIN

When a horror auteur starts making films with his name preceding the title, you just know it’s gonna be a stinker. Step forward Mr Carpenter. And now step back. With Shyalaman’s reputation swinging wildly from golden boy to confused adult we can only hope he can get his act together.

1. MAD MAX 4

Mel Gibson is now a Mellowing Max in this gritty sequel charting his rise to environmental harmony while he tears up the Outback in his now-classic Nissan Leaf.  Petrol tankers are few and far between and mostly converted into moving solar power collectors.  The local sickos struggle to maintain their gas guzzling, smoke belching vehicles – rusty Prius’s.

It is incredibly effective, the destruction of the White House for example in 2010 practically screams the end of life on earth, and the sheer expanse of destruction in L.A in Skyline, highlights the power of the aliens and just how they intend to destroy our race. There are however a number of cities that seam to always fall foul of this fate, Its almost hard to imagine an action film or scifi without a huge section of New york or LA being destroyed, and it seams like most directors are determined to take out Manhattan and Downtown L.A in every movie.

Games also target our large cities, taking out our most revered landmarks and reducing our Capitol cities to rubble.

But what other places do directors love blowing up and flooding or hitting with an earth quake? this list is the top 10 place that have appeared in disaster movies.

1. New York, NY

The big apple has had a bite taken out of it by aliens more than once over the past 10 years, from the giant alien crafts of Independence day, had its building clawed and trampled by not one but three monsters in the shape of a giant marshmallow man, Godzilla and Cloverfield. Its been shaken to the core in Deep Impact and Armageddon and then had all the mess washed away in The Day After Tomorrow.

2. Los Angeles

LA has seen its fair share of destruction, from being scorched in Volcano, to being obliterated by alien fire in Skyline. Los Angeles sunshine is darkened many times in movies like Transformers and Terminator 2 when a nuclear shock wave wipes it from the planet.

3. Washington, D.C

The White house never comes off well in a disaster movie, being such a well known landmark and much loved by the U.S, its pretty much a given that someone is going to take it out in a movie. One of the best destruction’s of the White house has to be in Independence day when the aliens fire a blue beam of energy down into the building and it explodes in brilliant blue light.

4. Paris, France

Being one of the most renowned romantic cities, some naughty people might enjoy the idea of it being obliterated in a mass of boiling lava or wiped out by a giant tidal wave. Of course Paris, being the destination of choice for many young Americans, appear in quite a few disaster movies, from The Day After Tomorrow to the Zombie outbreak of 28 Weeks Later.

The image of these two gargoyles watching silently from the roof of Notre Dame as a blast cloud approaches the city, is perhaps the most poignant image from Armageddon, an otherwise over hyped load of tosh.

5. London

We might not own half the world anymore, but the U.K does have many significant landmarks that look great being destroyed. In Reign of fire we see a gigantic dragon perched on top of big Ben, other spewing flames down over what is left of St Paul’s.

More recently it has been destroyed in the low budget production ‘Flood’ and in Harry Potter the Half-Blood-Prince the death eaters destroy the Millennium Bridge.

6. Las Vegas

While they are gambling in side the whole city is being torn apart outside, Vegas is one of the most unusual cities on the planet. Its fake pyramids and Sphinx being only part of the bizarre image of this desert surrounded city of dreams. But in disaster movies, these dreams of wealth turn into carnage as aliens and mother nature alike, love tearing pleasure culture to the ground, and stamping on it for good measure.

7. San Francisco

You would always think that San Franciso had been in more disaster films, but it does generally get overlooked for New york or L.A. In X Men ‘Last Stand’ Magneto takes it open himself to destroy the golden gate bridge so that we can reach Alcatraz.

8. Rome

Possibly one of the most beautiful and iconic cities on earth, Rome has avoiding destruction in many movies but was destroyed in the Core and the recent 2012. Rumour has it that the Vatican sued the movies director Emmerich, because he destroyed the Sistine chapel in his movie 2012.

9. Chicago

There are probably more, but the one that stands out for Chicago is the mess the making of Transformers 3 made to downtown Chicago in the upcoming movie. I also remember the Towering inferno was in Chicago and that was an awesome movie.

10. Tokyo

From childhood i remember Japan being destroyed by giant lizards, which were basically normal sized pet iguanas that had been dumped on a toy version of the Tokyo and look about confused as directors prod them to move forward.

Tray generally blogs about saving money and more recently virgin money options, he also has a passion for travel and is always bitching about the trolleys being empty on virgin trains .

Nicolas Cage stars as a 14th century Crusader who returns with his comrade (Ron Perlman) to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch (Claire Foy) to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence.

A priest (Stephen Campbell Moore), a grieving knight (Ulrich Thomsen), an itinerant swindler (Stephen Graham) and a headstrong youth (Robert Sheehan) join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl.

Limited pre-release screenings began December 2009. As the movie is delayed, the film was picked up by Rogue and will be released on January 7, 2011.

For instance, I can be in the most horrendous mood! I’m talking slamming doors, snapping at everyone who dares make eye contact and thumping around like a natural disaster leaving news worthy chaos in my wake. Yet, I’m almost certain that in 30 minutes time I will probably be grinning from ear to ear either at Doreen the forgettable fish or singing my not so tuneful lungs out along with Mama Mia in to my hairbrush and suddenly, all is right with the world again! I know that seems a tad dramatic but it’s true and if my collection/stress reducer someday does not have this desired result  – that’s when I find a therapist! But up to this point I have saved a fortune. There is just that selection of movies that never get old even though you can recite every word and somehow watching it for the thousandth time still gives you that feeling you got the first time. So, I have decided to celebrate these magical mood enhancing movies and by bringing them in to the spotlight once more. So this January, when you are inevitably feeling gloomy with the cold weather, dark nights, serious cash flow deficit, the flu and what feels like a million years until pay day, just snuggle up with a good movie and feel the warmth wash over you!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you 15 of the most classic feel good films around – enjoy over Xmas or the new year!

Bridget Jones

That’s right, any film that outs a woman’s secret collection of ‘big pants’ and somehow makes them a) acceptable and b) thought of as quite sexy must be a classic! Not to mention the delectable and quite charming Mr Darcy! Any movie that shows an ordinary and just like us woman finding the man of her dreams (and not the usual blonde, model type who of course can get any guy she chooses – very believable!) has to make a feel good hit. You will certainly be made to feel better for any of your own embarrassing moments!

The Wedding Singer

So Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) is a wedding singer in the 1980’s who meets Drew Barrymore’s character Julia Sullivan and needless to say this film makes for a hilarious romantic comedy. The two have since worked together on other funny films including the brilliant 50 first dates and its clearly a partnership that works! The dodgy 80’s outfits, Adam’s singing, the happy ending where they realise they are about to marry the wrong people and of course – the cameo by Billy Idol at the end make this a true feel good film that is sure to still give you belly ache from laughing too hard.

Little Miss Sunshine

This extremely original and quirky film documents a family’s determination to get their daughter in to a beauty pageant which sees them take a trip in their VW bus. This film has all the aspects you wouldn’t expect including a suicidal sibling, bankruptcy, the dad who preaches about success but is an actual loser in life, a son taking a vow of silence and a grandfather addicted to heroine! Expect no special effects but a whole lot of charm. I think we can all relate to a dysfunctional family like this one!

Finding Nemo

This is just one of the funniest animations created in a long time and you will roll about laughing again and again when you meet Doreen the fish voiced by Ellen DeGeneres who has a short term memory! The other animals that you meet along the way such as Crush the unbelievably cool Turtle and the group of Sharks who have vowed to be vegetarian, will leave you charmed and grinning from ear to ear and the reunion of Nemo with his dad at the end is so cute!

The Sound of Music

It’s quite hard to believe that a film released in 1965 is still loved as a favourite movie some 45 years on. Especially considering the progression in film since that era but the lack of CGI and animation does just not seem to bother us. This musical will have you singing along and lifting your spirits the minute Julie Andrews breaks in to song!

The Breakfast Club

Another classic film is the Breakfast Club which was released in 1985 and has lived on in our hearts. As kids we all like the idea of meeting four other stereo typical high school kids that would never talk to you in a million years but circumstances force you together and then you realise you are all alike. Going from unknown to popular overnight and forming and exclusive club was the dream. I think even as adults we can all still relate to this film and remember our high school days as well making it a truly feel good film.

Mama Mia

The fairly recent release sees a film made from the hugely popular ABBA songs which are sang throughout this magical musical. All our fave ABBA hits in one place what could possibly be better? Meryl Streep and friends give extremely funny performances and Pierce Brosnan lets us in on his very dodgy singing voice!

Toy Story

The third installment has just been released but for me the first film will always reign supreme! The adorable adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and friends will make you giggle while their fight to remain Andy’s number one toy will pull at your heart strings and make you regret that day you callously threw out Action Man/Barbie without thinking about their feelings!

Forrest Gump

This film captures the true essence of human kindness and spirit and depicts the life of Forrest Gump, a kind and caring person through and through. Forrest doesn’t know how to be nasty only to be kind and how to protect the ones he loves. His life demonstrates that you don’t have to be smart to be successful and makes you feel as though anything you have ever hoped for is possible. You are smiling through his successes and feeling upset with him for his losses. A true emotional roller coaster and a must see movie.

Groundhog Day

Bill Murray successfully displays a whole lot of sarcastic comedy thrown in with sheer misery yet manages to leave us charmed and loving his wisecracks all these years later. Imagine reliving the worst day of your life over and over again! We can’t begin to think about it but luckily we don’t have to worry. Instead, we can kick back, relax and watch Bill Murray relive his worst moments while our worries slowly begin to fade away.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil

Take a foul mouthed blind man in debt to his bookie (Pryor) and a deaf news stand owner (Wilder) who often misreads lips who happen to be at the scene of a crime together and get blamed for a murder so must then go on the run to clear their names and you have one of the funniest comedy films ever made. Add Kevin Spacey in as a villain as this has all the feel good movie points needed to hit the spot on a gloomy day.

It’s a Wonderful Life

Released in 1946, this is the oldest film on the list. It’s hard to believe that a film from this era can still capture our hearts now. A small man with big dreams sees his obligations stop him from pursuing the things he wants in life and finds himself stuck in a small town with a family to support and everyone demanding something of him. He then considers taking his own life as it becomes too much. I know this sounds like a depressing movie but he comes through and the pain make the victory more poignant and sweet! The relate-ability of this film and the ultimately happy ending are what has made it resonate with so many.

As Good As It Gets

As Good As It Gets tells the story of a single mother working as a waitress who forms unlikely friendships with a gay artist and a grumpy author. Nicholson (the grumpy guy) decides to turn his life around and become a better man. The message is that it is never too late to change and be a better person and the chances are you wont be able to resist a few tears at the end.

ET

Elliot is a little boy who finds a lost alien which he calls ET. The film is about him keeping a secret while he searches to find a way to get him home but mostly its a story of friendship and the lengths people will go to honour a friend. ET is definitely the film that takes me back to my childhood each time I see it. I remember being transfixed by this weird looking little Alien and loved how cute it was and not a lot has changed today. Again, tears are bound to be shed near the end and this really is a classic feel good film.

Dirty Dancing

This release has been described numerous times as the ‘best movie medicine’ and is constantly on top of the best movie lists. Featuring the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray it sees the unlikely couple dance together and eventually end up together. Total romance fest and the soundtrack and dancing are bound to get you out of any funk.

True Blood

True Blood – Really represents what the show is and I like the “god hates fangs” bit” which shows the humour the show has. The intro was created by production studio Digital Kitchen who are also responsible for the superb Dexter and Six feet Under intros. The Concept of the Intro was the idea of a whore in the house of God and to end on a kind of redemption or birth into the church with a baptism. It was also the idea of a predatory being observing humans from a distance. This is why the images of sex, violence, blood and religion appear as being spliced together. Quite a few of the people in the intro actually work for Digital Kitchen and if you look closely you might also see the blood that the team smeared over the images.

Dexter

Staying with the brilliant Digital Kitchen, we move onto one of the best intros i have seen in years. Simply called “Start of Dexter’s day”, the sequence is meant to show you everything about the Character and his sinister nature. Although the actions are all very typical of any morning routine like flossing, dressing and drinking juice, all of it delves deep into the killer in Dexter’s nature.

Fringe

Andrew Kramer of Video Copilot who made the Fringe intro was careful to establish shots that really describing the intrigue of the show, in much the same way as X Files did. It was created in HD (1920×1080) using After Effects and 3D Max to get he depth. The title music was actually written by the shows producer J.J Abrams. There is also a hidden message that reads “observers are here” in the intro, part way through.

The Ghost Whisperer

This is an interesting intro, mainly due to the artwork that is shown throughout the sequence. The artwork is by Maggie Taylor a Florida artist who works in digital image and photography. The suitcase in the sequence demonstrates travel into a more positive space, the bee symbolises the soul and release of the spirit and a ghost holding the egg is the symbol of its unfinished business.

House

The original start of the title sequence was to be a cane and a bottle of Vicodin, but Fox objected to this and so had the creators place an ariel view of Princeton University there instead. The makers also used the universal symbol for hospital “H” and overlaid the face of doctor House. By far the music that has been favoured by fans is the portions of “Teardrop” by Massive Attack that is inserted into the intro.

Desperate Housewives

You may not have noticed the intro to art history and female oppression, its a very clever sequence spinning from Lucas Cranach the Elders “Adam and Eve” from 1526, where Adam is then crushed by a giant apple. Then we go further back to Jan van Eyck’s “Arnolfini Wedding” in 1434 and then speeding forward to the 1930’s and Grant Woods “American Gothic” and then forward to Roy Lichtenstein in the 1960’s where a women socks her husband in the face.

Mad Men

A homage to Saul Bass the graphic designer behind the skyscraper titles to Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, it also reflects beautifully that era of marketing. It also links the falling man from the movie poster for Vertigo and Hitchcock has been listed as the main influence behind the titles. The music that runs over the sequence is “A Beautiful Mine”, by RJD2

Big Bang Theory

The credits to Big Bang are exactly that, it shows what has happened to the earth since the big bang. The title credits are sung by the Bare naked Ladies and the song is called ‘The History of Everything’.

Carnivale

These titles are based around Tarot cards, each and every card is zoomed in on and you are taken away into another world. The sequence is made up of iconic moments from the American Depression era, the Klu Klux Klan, Babe Ruth and Jesse Owens. They won an Emmy for “Outstanding Main Title Design” in 2004.

Dead Like Me

Possibly one of the funniest sequences out of the bunch, i think this tells you exactly what the program is about in only a few frames. Good music, great comedy and a great amount of grounded honestly in these titles leave you really wanting to see more.

Waking Dead

These brilliantly crafted individuals who we share our lives with are deliberately flawed, they allow us to live an alternate life and experience at least in part, what their addiction is like. In some cases this is seen through their eyes in others we get to see the collateral damage that builds up around the character, like in the case of ER’s – Abby Lockhard.
Addictions cover a whole array of patterns, from searching for the answer to quick weight loss to self harming and even sex, the majority of writers of many shows choosing it seams, to have the main characters reaching for the bottle or bottle. Some however are addicted to things that many of us may battle with in everyday life, especially as we get older and our bodies begin to creak and groan, we might become reliant on painkillers for example. We also get to experience the wild untamed desires of these addictions and watch from afar as the thrill ride turns into the nightmare, in the case of Hank Moody from Californication the fact that he he sleeping with 100’s may make us envy him, but then as the repercussions begin to eat away at his family and Friends, it makes you question just where that envy comes from.

Perhaps my favourite addict of all time is the brilliant Dr Gregory House, his painfully antisocial behaviour, and keen mind even through a haze of painkillers makes him wonderfully intriguing. House is said to be based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes and the Vicodin is a replacement for Holmes recreational drug use. House takes painkillers due to the pain from his leg, he had a muscle infarction in his right thigh and due to it being misdiagnosed his muscle died. A lot of time through the series House is in series pain and Vicodin is his only friend.

Desperate housewives –  Mike Delfino
Choice Addiction –  Painkillers

Due to a being hit by a car driven by one of his Wisteria Lane neighbours and spending 6 months in a coma, Mike starts taking highly addictive painkillers to be able to continue working as a plumber. He manages to hide his addition from everyone of his neighbours and Susan his Wife. But when doing work at the house of Bree Van De Kamp he drops a painkiller and Bree discovers it, she tells her friend Susan that about this and that the painkillers are highly addictive. He then gets tangled up in arguments with dealers and generally ruins his marriage to Susan and the enjoyment of raising his son with her.

Addiction – Eating Disorders

Starved –  Sam, Billie Frasier, Dan Roundtree & Adam Williams

The series revolves around a group of people who all suffer from various eating disorders, Sam a commodities trader suffers from anorexia and he is secretly in love with Billie Frasier also an anorexic and bulimic. They have two friends Dan who is obsessed with fast weight loss by getting a gastric bypass, but then always cancels it, and Adam a police officer who is obsessed with food and using his position to steal food from people and restaurants.

Addiction – Alcoholisim

Will & Grace – Karen Walker
Choice Addiction –  Alcohol
Never seen with out either Alcohol or an array of different pills, Karen is a furiously independent drunk living off her very rich husband. Karen manages to carry around a liqueur cabinet in her tiny clutch, which resembles Mary Poppins bag when she brings out a bottle of Champagne.

ER – Abby Lockhard

Choice Addiction –  Alcohol

We meet Abby when she is a recovering alcoholic, 5 years sober and attending AA classes. she even becomes a sponsor to Dr. John Carter (Cloony), but a few bad points in her life set her off drinking again. Now either he is written as an extremely ‘functioning alcoholic’ or the shows writers have been drawn up in all the glitz and glamour of the 1960’s New york. Here is hoping that Don gets well and truly trolled in the office and takes off all his clothes during a pitch.

Sam discovers that Demon blood makes his powers far stronger and if he drinks 3 gallons of pure demon blood he can kill demons simply by closing his eyes. The downside to his addiction is that drinking it change his personality, and he becomes more of a cold monster.

Dexter – Dexter Morgan

After witnessing his police informant mother being chainsawed apart by a drug dealer, Dexter has been left with a few issues. One big issue being that he enjoys killing, although he has moved on from the dogs and cats he would kill in his youth, now Dexter hunts people. He has however learned to control his craving and following a code of honor set out by his adopted father Harry, the police man who found him at the murder scene, now only kills those who he believes deserve to die. Dexter struggles to live with his addiction to killing, a side of him he refers to as his dark passenger throughout the series and he finds it harder and harder to hide, who he really is from his family, friends and work colleagues.
