The plot of the movie is centred on a 14th century community which is seething with Black Plague. The church is under pressure from the population to end the disease. A witch is accused of performing sorcery and bringing the disease to the town. In an attempt to combat the plague, the church instructs two knights (Behmen and Felson, played by Cage &Perlman resp.) who have just returned from the crusades to relocate the accused witch (Anna, played by Foy) to a distant monastery where monks will decide Anna’s fate. The knights agree on the condition that Anna is given a fair trial. On reaching the monastery, the group finds that Anna is actually a demon using the girl’s body as a vessel. The demon tries to destroy the last copy of the ancient book of wisdom. In the end, Behemen kills the demon and frees Anna’s body, dying himself shortly afterwards.
The movie review by Reuters says that Season of the Witch has won almost universal scorn of the critics. It is dull and appears meddled up, with the story sprinting to the end instead of advancing meaningfully. Nicholas Cage looks completely out of place in a period movie. Also, Claire Foy doesn’t quite fit into a witch’s character. Lastly, almost every movie review of Season of the witch agrees that the visual effects and the editing of the movie take away value from it.

The movie’s production design, photography and costumes are good. Ron Perlman plays his role as Felson quite well too. All in all, Season of the Witch is a dull supernatural thriller which fails to captivate audience. However, pout of the new movies, Season of the Witch fairs better than Country Strong.
